BY THE THROAT
The wonderful opportunity to collaborate with great inspiring minds is a lifetime goal and fortunately happens often. Most prominent among these have been exchanges with luminaries such as the futurist Bob Stein, artist Bill Viola and his wife Kira Perov, curators Alma Ruiz and Aaron Betsky, filmer Mike Figgis, performer/philosopher Susan Kozel, architectural theo- rists Silvia Lavin and Sanford Kwinter, plus architects as Thom Mayne and Greg Lynn. The project with Australian/Icelandic musician Ben Frost is certainly one among these memorable meetings leading to meaningful and fulfilling results, where one plus one becomes three.

Ben Frost is the composer I collaborated with for the sound component of Nothing Further Happens, 2011, a single channel video are installation which has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oaxaca (MACO) and at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

“[By The Throat] was created under
the cloak of nocturnal snow in the far northern reaches of financial-fantasy island, a concept borne of [Ben] Frost and weapons manufacturer, war monger and evil genius Sruli Recht, capture by the all-seeing-eye of Bjarni Gríms and forged in the fires of hell by Rebeca Méndez... Frost’s music is all about contrast—merging beautiful classical minimalism with the dirty grind of metal and drone core.”

– Headphone Commute, Amazon.com Review

“It’s all total genius—you have really hooked into it now and it’s really taken on a life of its own... it’s really really beautiful Rebeca, it almost makes me feel guilty it’s so good... I’m going to have to find a way to settle the huge

debt I owe to you creatively now.

Maybe I have to write you an opera.”
