THE EXPERIMENTAL EXERCISE OF FREEDOM
The Experimental Exercise of Freedom: Lygia Clark, Gego, Mathias Goeritz, Hélio Oiticica, and Mira Schendel focuses its attention on a period in post war Latin America marked by great artistic experimentation and cultural dynamism, The design of the book challenges the “edges” or “boundaries: of the page creating spatial tensions, emphasizing the possibility of expansion beyond limitations. In direct response to the title of the exhibition, the text’s orientation is vertical rather than horizontal, behaving unconventionally to book design standards. The decision to represent the art works in duotones, was not only a response to budget constraints, but also in consideration that the book is primarily an historical document, one to reveal a more complex understanding of this period.
